Ruins

There are multiple artists with this name: a Japanese prog-rock duo, an Australian black-metal band, a German thrash-metal band, a new wave band, a Canadian ska band, and a Chinese rock band. 1) Ruins is a bass-&-drum duo that formed in Tokyo, Japan, in 1985. They are usually pigeonholed into the category of prog rock. The only constant member of Ruins is the drummer/vocalist Tatsuya Yoshida (吉田達也, Yoshida Tatsuya), who has cycled through four different bassists since the band’s inception.

Dengue Fever

Dengue Fever’s psychedelic take on the Cambodian pop sounds of the 60s makes them one of rock’n’roll’s most unique success stories. They draw enthusiastic crowds from LA to the UK, from Maui to Moscow, and leave critics rummaging through their thesauruses looking for new superlatives to describe their sound. The band’s latest release, the documentary feature film Sleepwalking Through The Mekong (DVD/CD Soundtrack) continues the story and evolution of the band as they travel to Cambodia as the first Western group to perform the music of Cambodia since the fall of the Khmer Rouge.

Totally Unicorn

Just as the Hunt Of The Unicorn was considered by many to be the high point in Medieval tapestry manufacture, so will history recognize the bearded magical animal metal of Wollongong's latest fantastical four headed Chimera, Totally Unicorn be considered to be the watermark for musicians that are both hirsute and technically gifted when it comes to bringing a party that is part wall of crushing noise, part pithy word play and all monstrously enjoyable.

Wooden Shjips

Wooden Shjips is a vital and refreshingly inspired quartet from San Francisco playing loud rock ‘n’ roll in a style heavily influenced by the experimentalism of psychedelia, classical minimalism and garage rock excess. Started as an experiment in rhythmic primitivism and group improvisation, the current lineup brings a more structured rock approach to its performances, utilizing a traditional lineup of drums (Omar Ahsanuddin), bass (Dusty Jermier), organ (Nash Whalen), guitar (Erik “Ripley” Johnson) and vocals.

Deerhoof

Deerhoof is an American independent music group formed in San Francisco in 1994. While it began as an improvisational bass/harmonica solo project of Rob Fisk (subsequently in 7 Year Rabbit Cycle, Common Eider, King Eider), it currently consists of founding drummer Greg Saunier, bassist and singer Satomi Matsuzaki, and guitarists John Dieterich and Ed Rodriguez. Initially performing improvised noise punk, Deerhoof became widely renowned and influential in the 2000s through self-produced creative output combining "noise, sugary [pop] melodies, and an experimental spirit into utterly distinctive music". They have released a dozen or more studio albums since 1997; their album "Mountain Moves" was released in September 2017.

Pitchfork labeled Deerhoof as "the best band in the world.” The New York Times described them as “one of the most original rock bands to have come along in the last decade.” From their humble beginnings as an obscure San Francisco noise act, they've become one of indie music's most influential bands with their ecstatic and unruly take on pop.

Adrian Sherwood

Adrian Sherwood has been around for a long time. He's the man behind the On-U Sound label, and eponymous sound system. The one that usually does the rounds at least once a year, and has done so for as long as you can remember. If you've ever been to an On-U gig you'll know it's loud, uncompromising, live dub sound, and you'd remember there's lots and lots of noise, as you recall the ringing that's left in your ears for hours after.
