Melbourne band who mainline German electro-punk styles (DAF/Cluster/Kraftwerk) and melt them down with subterranean Americana that draws on the nightmare sound of early Suicide, the eschatological tapes and drum machine style of the first incarnation of Destroy All Monsters et al. Captured Tracks calls it “’74 Germany + ’79 Sheffield + ’09 Australia”.
The dreamy, reverb-laden outlet of songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Trevor Powers (Boise, ID), sharing his emotions in every drop of his music, leaving no room for any sort of privacy. Powers channels vocal and at times musical tendencies to that of baroque-pop singer Chris Garneau as well Mike Hadreas of Perfume Genius, both claimed to be influences, but develops a sound that cuts much deeper.

Formed in 2008 with Pat Breen, Kelly Brown, K Mason, Stuart Campbell, and Emma Sharp, all relocated from Hobart, Tasmania. The Mountain Goats is the musical project of singer-songwriter and guitarist John Darnielle. The New Yorker magazine referred to him as "America’s best non-hip-hop lyricist". In its June 2006 issue, Paste magazine named Darnielle one of the "100 Best Living Songwriters". Darnielle’s lyrics are literate and filled with imagery that reference classic literature, religion and mythologies, pop culture, art and history. Others are vague references to his stepfather, and with the 2005 album The Sunset Tree Darnielle finally offers a more intimate account of his experience as an abused child.
Surf City first came in to existence when bored friends Davin Stoddard and Josh Kennedy met at a party in Mt Roskill in 2004. Tired of the heavy avant-garde music that was prolific at the time Stoddard and Kennedy teamed up with Josh’s brother Jamie and Logan Collins to form the band. Originally called The Fibs and then Kill Surf City their fascination with fast guitar pop and the early '80s sound of Dunedin soon saw them develop their own unique and catchy sound.
Woollen Kits play a kind of washed-out punk rock that slides a line between Bratmobile, Jonathan Richman and Scratch Acid and have released three home-recorded and handmade EPs on their own Periodic Collective label over the past two years, including a split with Wonderful Fellowship. In 2009 they became a three piece, and continue to play short and catchy pop tunes, shorter and catchier than ever.

Real Estate is a band from Ridgewood, New Jersey, United States, now based in Brooklyn, N.Y. The band has roots in the Garden State and they’re led by singer/guitarist Martin Courtney and feature guitarist Matthew Mondanile (the latter known to some for his work in Ducktails, Predator Vision, and The Parasails) as well as Alex Bleeker on bass and Etienne Duguay (also of Predator Vision) on the drums.
The Axemen is a New Zealand band formed around 1981 in protest against the South African Springbok rugby team tour of New Zealand, a tour which created great controversy, especially as was in contradiction to New Zealand’s obligations under the Gleneagles Agreement. The Axemen played in Chch Cathedral 1981 in response to the Springbok tour. They also played at the protests for homosexual law reform in 1983, with member Little Stevie McCabe being severely beaten up in the Cathedral Square, Christchurch, toilets.
