The Yearlings

Roots/alt. country duo The Yearlings combine warm harmonies with delicate flat-picking and sparse country blues to create songs that are at once haunting and soothing. Hailing from Adelaide, The Yearlings have pushed new limits in Australia's Roots/Alt. country scene. Robyn Chalklen and Chris Parkinson have wasted no time in getting down to the business of making music since meeting at the Tamworth Country Music Festival in 2000. Their successful self-titled debut album (released on Reckless Records in 2003) was recorded live in 8 hours and long-listed for an ARIA nomination.

Joe Pug

The day before his senior year as a playwright student at the University of North Carolina, Joe Pug sat down for a cup of coffee and had the clearest thought of his life: I am profoundly unhappy here. Then came the second clearest. Pug packed up his belongings and drove the longest route possible to Chicago. Working as a carpenter by day, the 23 year-old Pug spent nights playing the guitar he hadn't picked up since his teenage years.

Artist Type:

Chris Jagger

'Whatever else I have done, I always come back to music' says Chris, who has of necessity done a number of other jobs and worked in the theatre, journalism and 'any other damn job that will pay the rent.' He lives in Somerset where he enjoys spending as much time as possible outdoors, looking after animals and creating a garden with 'anything you can eat; it's better to grow food, for yourself and whatever flies by.'

Freya Hollick

Freya Hollick is a young singer-songwriter originally from the country town of Ballarat, Australia. She records lo-fidelity songs and sings in a voice of ethereal beauty. The themes of her lyrics span from psychedelic imagery and fairytale characters to personal experiences, and those of friends and acquaintances. Freya's music is largely influenced by the Beatles, Nick Drake and the Velvet Underground, while she also takes inspiration from Syd Barrett, and more contemporary indie artists such as Eels and M. Ward. She is sometimes compared to Emiliana Torrini.

Gurrumul Yunupingu

Australia has produced very few, if any, popular singers of such extraordinary talent that their voices seem to be a gift from the gods. Not until now. Listen to Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu as he sings in Galpu, Djambarrpuynu, Gumatj - and, occasionally, in English - and you will instantly surrender to the greatest voice this continent has ever recorded. Blind from birth, he is not an Aboriginal musician singing protest songs against a rock, reggae or folk-country backing.

Totally Gourdgeous

Totally Gourdgeous play instruments made from gourds, but that's just the start of it.
Penelope Swales (guitar), Carl Pannuzzo (drums), Mal Webb (bass, mbira and bugle) and Andrew Clermont (violin, mandolin and guitar) sing songs (written by them and a few dear friends) of love, fellowship and environmental sanity. Folk-Funk-Philosophy. Outrageous eclectic beauty, united under gourd. Imagine Joni Mitchell and James Brown getting down in Bob Marley's pumpkin patch in glitzy costumes.

The Gadflys

The Gadflys began in the 1980s as a three-piece punk band founded by brothers Mick and Phil Moriarty. Normally, ‘punk’ means distorted guitars and loud drums playing as fast as possible. For The Gadflys, it meant a double bass, guitar and clarinet playing an eclectic mix of pop, rock, country and ballads. The trio made its mark first as distinctive buskers, then as a popular pub band. Over the years The Gadflys have grown from the basic trio to a big band with horns, keyboards and backing vocalists.
