Anberlin was formed in 2002 in Orlando, FL, USA. Their debut album, Blueprints For The Black Market, was quite successful. Spurred on by popular singles Readyfuels and Change the World, it sold over 60,000 copies and raised Anberlin's profile. They released their sophomore album, Never Take Friendship Personal, in February 2005. The album was praised by critics, garnering favourable reviews and winning the band new fans.

Regular John guitarist Brock Tengstrom remembers one family gathering where he was primed to meet his cousin’s boyfriend: “He’s in a band,” Tengstrom’s folks told him. Turns out the weird skinny guy with big sunglasses and black fingernails was Grinspoon frontman Phil Jamieson, pre-Guide to Better Living. “He gave me a copy of that Green EP,” recalls Tengstrom, “and I taught him how to play a few Nirvana songs.”
Brandon Richard Flowers (born June 21, 1981) is the vocalist and keyboardist in the American synth rock band The Killers. Flowers was born in Las Vegas, Nevada and later raised in Nephi, Utah. Grinspoon are an Australian post-grunge band from Lismore, Australia, fronted by Phil Jamieson with Pat Davern on guitar, Joe Hansen on bass and Kristian Hopes on drums. Founded in 1995, they came to fame when they were Unearthed by national, commercial-free radio station Triple J thanks to their track Sickfest. This won them the competition for the Lismore area. The band was heavily influenced by "grunge" music in their early career, including the band Helmet, and developed a strong following among mosh pit crowds.
Fistful Of Mercy is Joseph Arthur, Ben Harper, and Dhani Harrison. The band formed in February 2010, when Arthur asked Harper to accompany him in the studio; Harper then asked Harrison, whom he had met at a skate park in Santa Monica, California, to accompany them. Upon arriving at the Carriage House studio in Los Angeles’ Silverlake neighborhood, the trio went on to write and record nine original acoustic songs. Harrison compared the trio's collaborative process to his father's stint in The Traveling Wilburys.
