Onyx is a hip hop group from New York City. Originally formed in 1988 by Fredro Starr, Sonsee, the late Big DS, the group later added Sticky Fingaz, Starr's cousin, in 1991, managed by Diamond Cut Entertainment's Milton Lynch. The group was formed in 1988 and Onyx released its first 12" single, "Ah, and We Do it Like This", in 1990. The song sounded very jazz influenced, much unlike their later work.
Downsyde are an Australian hip hop group from Perth, Australia that formed in 1996. Downsyde inspiration seems to be derived from a culmination of Middle Eastern, Aboriginal, South American sounds, and samples from obscure animated films. Consequence (Cameron Mclaren), a drum and bass artist, pioneering the new minimal style of drum and bass. His first album, Live For Never, was released on D-Bridge's Exit record label in November, 2009.
Theophilus London is a Brooklyn, USA based hip hop artist with heavy electro influences. London released his debut mixtape JAM! in 2008. In 2009 he collaborated with Machine Drum for his second mixtape This Charming Mixtape which brought London to a wider audience. In 2010 London released the mixtape I Want You which features covers of classic songs. London's track Flying Overseas (featuring Devonté Hynes and Solange Knowles) enjoyed popularity with music bloggers in November 2010. Originating from Newcastle in 2008 Violence has been working hard to make a name for themselves in the Newcastle hardcore scene and has just recently been featured in Reverb Street Press. They deliver a full and heavy traditional style of hardcore while maintaining a distinct originality particularly through front man Glen Mountford’s vocal style. As well as an incredible talent this band offers a passion and conviction to their music that has secured them an ever increasing local fan base.
O'Shea Jackson (born June 15, 1969 in South Central Los Angeles, California) is an American rapper, actor, producer and film director known for being a member of the controversial rap group N.W.A. In recent years, Ice Cube's acting career has overshadowed his career in music. He released his solo debut album, AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted in 1990 to critical and commercial success, although upon its release he was accused of racism and misogyny.
Clipse is an American hip hop duo, formed in Norfolk, Virginia in 1992, made up of brothers Gene "Malice" Thornton and Terrence "Pusha T" Thornton. They met Pharrell in 1993, he formed a working relationship with the duo and helped them secure a contract with Elektra Records. The group's debut single flopped, but Williams resuscitated their careers by signing them to his Star Trak Label. The Clipse's debut album, Lord Willin', was released in 2002, and their sophomore effort, Hell Hath No Fury, was released in 2006 to much critical acclaim.
Rapper, DJ, and producer Pete Rock first emerged in 1991 as one half of a duo with C.L. Smooth, debuting with the All Souled Out EP. A hit LP, Mecca and the Soul Brother, followed before the two went their separate ways in the wake of 1994's The Main Ingredient, with Rock remaining a prolific studio presence prior to the release of his solo debut, Soul Survivor, on Loud/rca four years later. Dropped from the label, he continued his career as an independent producer, and later signed to Rapster/Bbe in 2001 for PeteStrumentals.
There is more than one artist with this name: (1) Pedestrian (AKA The Pedestrian) is the pseudonym of rapper James Brandon Best. Possibly the least well known of anticon's co-founders, his first release, the 12" "The Toss & Turn", wasn't issued until 2004, though he had made several appearances on compilations and was part of one-off groups Stuffed Animals & Object Beings. Pedestrian's full-length debut, Unindian Songs, Vol. 1, came out in 2005. Asides from guest spots on records by other anticon accomplices such as Telephone Jim Jesus and Themselves, he has not released anything since.
The Funkoars are an Australian hip hop act from Adelaide, Australia and formed in 1999. Funkoars were founded on the unique personalities of four individuals. These larger than life musicians were drawn to each other not just from a love of music, but their light hearted and jovial outlook on life. It’s these personalities coupled with their prodigious talent that has brought Funkoars their success. The energetic and humorous nature of their lyrics is not something that can be emulated.
