The Hornstars

There are many words that could be used to describe Melbourne band The Hornstars. Funky. Danceable. Loud. Quirky (have you seen that video?). But above all else, the Hornstars are all about fun, and their primary mission is to show their audience a funky good time.

The Hornstars sound is big, brassy and hard to pigeonhole. The lineup featuring Clancy Cullen (vocals), Daniel Bardan (trumpet), Bruce Cousins (trombone), Russell B Myers (tenor sax), Joey Mount (drums), Mike Holloway (bass), Peter Bonett (keys), Gareth Durant (guitar) and Eric Morand (alto sax and percussion) bring a wide range of influences to the mix. Jazz, soul reggae - it may not all be funk as we know it, but it is definitely funky.

The Hornstars formed in 2016, legend has it, after founding members were kicked out of their ska band for allegedly being “too funky”. What came next was inevitable. The band quickly recruited their 9-piece lineup and confected a set of catchy and danceable songs, which they took to the pubs and bars of Melbourne and beyond, and eventually released as their debut album in March 2020.

During the COVID-enforced hiatus, band members continued to write, getting together when restrictions allowed. The band’s song writing continued to evolve, sometimes reflecting what was going on in the world outside (witness the hard funk grooves of "No Gigs" and "Half Way There"), and at others expressing aspirations for brighter post-pandemic future ("Touch", "Say Goodbye"). Occasionally emerging between lockdowns in 2021, the Hornstars were greeted with an enthusiastic reception and sold out shows.

With their second album Half Way There released in August this year, the Hornstars are looking forward to playing more live shows in 2022 and beyond. And while we are still living in uncertain times, here is one thing to be sure of - The Hornstars are still having fun in 2022, and so should you.

Joyce Prescher

Joyce Prescher is a Melbourne based singer-songwriter originally from the Netherlands. Slowly but steadily, Joyce has been making a name for herself in the Americana and folk scene.

With her carefully crafted lyrics, haunting melodies and rich velvety vocals she takes you back to days long gone. Her words are delivered with such honesty and melancholy, you cannot help but be roped in and left mesmerised.

In 2020 Joyce joined the line up of a show called Keep the Circle Unbroken, curated by Delsinki. With the show she has performed at the Memo Music Hall, the 2022 Port Fairy Folk Festival and as part of their regional Victoria tour in 2021. She shared the stage with many Australian favourites, including Tim Rogers, Kylie Auldist, Mick Thomas, Debra Byrne, Sarah Carroll, Kerryn Fields and XANI. Joyce Prescher also features on the Keep the Circle Unbroken album, which was recorded live in July 2020 at the Memo Music Hall in St Kilda, between the two Melbourne lockdowns.

In November 2021 she performed as part of three sold out shows paying tribute to the late Justin Townes Earle at the Brunswick Ballroom.

More recently, Joyce completed a tour as part of the Sing a Song of Sixpence line up, with artists including Abby Dobson, Freya Josephine Hollick, Charm of Finches, Van Walker, Grim Fawkner and more.

Joyce Prescher released her debut album Home in 2017, which was praised by PBS and listed in their top 10 albums upon release. She has finished recording her sophomore album, which is to be released in the second half of 2022.

The Kevin Borich Express

Kevin Borich of The La De Das released DUETS album in 2023 and is touring Australia in 2024 with The Kevin Borich Express.

After the success of my last album ‘Totem’ in 2014, Stephen Green convinced me it was high time to celebrate what has been a long career. And so, our plan was hatched.

In 2022, I recorded a greatest hits album with my producer Nick O’Donnell, aptly titled ‘Legacy’. ‘Legacy’ held the number one position on the AMRAP radio charts for 3 months. Now in 2023, we’re proud to release ‘Duets’, a celebration of a lifetime of music with friends!

I’ve shared stages, hung out, misbehaved and now recorded with some of the greatest musicians of all time. I’m so extremely grateful to each of these amazing artists and friends from around the world for their contributions and precious time spent making the record.

‘Duets’ features Joe Walsh (The Eagles and The James Gang), Leo Sayer, Ian Moss (Cold Chisel), Tim Rogers (You Am I), Russell Morris, Suze DeMarchi (Baby Animals), Ella Hooper (Killing Heidi), Angry Anderson (Rose Tattoo), Joe Camilleri (Black Sorrows), Ross Wilson (Daddy Cool/Mondo Rock), Angela Fabian and John Swan (Swanee/Party Boys).

Capturing not only their amazing voices, the tracks see Joe Walsh and Ian Moss star with their guitars, Joe Camilleri sing with his sax and Ross Wilson charm with his harp.

There were also the friends we so hoped we could have included on the record, Renee Geyer and Doug Parkinson, who will be sadly missed. ‘Duets’ has been a real labour of love. Recorded over the last several years, we’ve encountered many obstacles and challenges, and hundreds of late nights—though we revel in the vampire hours. Primarily recorded in my home studio as well as hotel suites, lounge rooms, theatre stages, backstage green rooms...you name it we did it! We wrestled, we cajoled, and we made a cracking album we are so extremely proud of.

Looking back over making the record, the thing that stands out most for me is that when we originally tracked each song with my vocals alone, they sounded like “Kevin Borich songs”. And now, with each guest’s wonderfully strong artistic identity and unique voice, they’ve effortlessly transformed each song into THEIR song. This is the reason why each of these artists have had such amazing careers: their unique, undeniable, completely recognisable voices and personalities. I admire them all.

I would also like to thank my amazing band members Jon Carson (drums) and Chris Gilbert (Bass) for their wonderful support, talent and friendship.

I hope you enjoy listening to ‘Duets’ as much as we enjoyed making it

Brett Poliness & Katie Scott

Dark, visceral and drenched in an otherworldly psychedelia only the most affecting art could muster, this is the handwerk of Brett Poliness and Katie Scott.
Growing up on a balanced diet of early Genesis, Neil Young & Crazy Horse and his parents’ towering collection of over 250 seminal LPs, a young Brett Poliness found his creative catalyst resting on the hammers of the family upright piano. His love of art-rock, meditative repetition, and the sombre earthiness instilled in his writing by the old instrument developed into his 20s and beyond.
Known to Australian grunge audiences of the noughties as the drummer for prolific Melbourne-based instrumental outfit, Silver Ray (Cam Butler, Julitha Ryan), Poliness and his associates released a searing four studio albums, joining Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds on the Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus tour of 2004.
As the drummer for ex-Bad Seeds and The Wreckery member, Hugo Race & The True Spirit, Poliness entered a further five releases into his catalogue, joining the band’s European tour throughout 2016 and ‘17. Poliness has appeared with Mick Harvey, featured on the debut solo release of Brian Henry Hooper (Beasts of Bourbon, Kim Salmon and the Surrealists, Rowland S. Howard), and is a current member of Charlie Marshall and The Body Electric.
Now, Brett Poliness is reborn - this time, alongside chief collaborator and artistic ally, Katie Scott (Howl at the Moon, Pony Face, Ladie Dee, Plague Doctor).
The duo’s debut album, A Chance to Fail, rallies an aesthetic that is equal parts cinematic, spellbinding and nightmarish, inspired by Polish jazz legend and film composer, Krystof Komeda. Scott’s searing vocals pierce a cooly orchestrated sound palette and whip through the heart of the album’s lyricism, as do her many, varied influences - from Portishead (Beth Gibbons), Tom Waits and Mark Lanegan through to Billie Holiday and the crucial legacy of Jeff Buckley’s songwriting. All the while, Poliness’ generative work as a drummer/composer rushes to the fore. Painted by shocks of Cave’s The Skeleton Tree with the dauntless tenacity of early PJ Harvey records also showcased in Poliness’ debut solo record, The Is The Colour Of Black When It Gets Burned (2003), A Chance to Fail embraces what is undoubtedly Poliness and Scott’s drug of choice: their very own brand of rhythmic repetition and musing syncopation.
The result? Nothing short of sublime hallucinations from a whole other plane.

Think About You

"The sophomore album from Naarm/Melbourne art-rock outfit Think About You is a captivating collection of violin-driven lo-fi indie rock tunes. With raw vocals that are perfectly rough around the edges and sweeping swells of sound featuring guitars, trumpet, propelling drums and, you guessed it, violin, Don’t Die On Me establishes Think About You as one to watch."
