Justin Bernasconi

Originally from Cambridgeshire England, Justin Bernasconi settled in the urban heart of Melbourne’s music community in 2004. Known as one of the city’s finest guitarists and songwriters, he continues to explore and expand his craft to raise the banner of ‘folk’ over new horizons. His previous solo albums delivered a captivating mix of alt-folk, Americana and bluegrass between evocative stories and exhilarating instrumentals. He looks back to British roots on third release Sleeping Like A Maniac. Tracks evolve like acts in a play. From setting the scene of one man's emotional journey through to vignettes of whimsy and soliloquies of despair and hope.

Rules of form are broken, revealing sonic sophistication outside the square. Bernasconi’s deft cross-picking drives the surging rhythm of mental turmoil. It’s the tale of a man striving to move on from his relationship mess, his lies and confusion. Intense dissonant guitar is relieved by harmony as vocals rise and fall.

Australian audiences have embraced Bernasconi’s stirring fusion of mainstream and experimental folk. He draws from a deep well of influences. The classical world, indie folk and world-wide cultures all inform Bernasconi’s compositions. Just as Rock and Roll was born of the Blues and UK Punk assumed the vibe of Reggae, Bernasconi’s sound builds genre-bending bridges. Moods segue from folk balladry to rhythmic abstract urgency. Think Tallest Man On Earth, Satie, John Fahey and Richard Thompson

Speakeasy

We are an original funk-rock band from the live music capital of Australia. Soulful vocals, original funky grooves, and dirty horns combine in our own entertaining world of sound – you can hear anything you want right here. We are at home making noise in a crowded pub band room or rattling the glassware in a prestigious blues or jazz venue. We make no distinction, so feel free to dance or just move to the groove.

Influences range from New Orleans funksters Galactic through Trombone Shorty to Aussie legends Hunters and Collectors. We have filled the Worker’s Club to capacity and sold out the Paris Cat. We get community radio airplay, including Sydney’s Radio Eastside 87.9

Our song ‘Straight Ahead’ won AMEX funding to record at Melbourne’s iconic Sing Sing Studios with legendary producer Adam Rhodes (Cat Empire, Angus & Julia Stone). The song went on to win the Voyager International Songwriting Competition, Soul and RnB category.

Jeff Duff

In a flamboyant and often controversial music career Jeff Duff has released twenty-seven albums including a recent album with members of legendary British rock band Deep Purple.
When Duffo took refuge in England in the eighties, he had, as they say, worn out his welcome in Australian rock. He was simply too much of a handful, this ‘waif with a wharfie’s voice!’ camping it up out front of his trail-blazing rock ensemble ‘Kush‘. At the time, Jeff’s androgynous stage persona, dressed in leotards, garish make-up and a touch of the operatics was considered far too outrageous for many Australian audiences.

Jeff quickly established himself in the UK and became the darling of London’s new wave movement during the eighties staying one step ahead of his peers with his flamboyant performances. The exhibitionism and visual assault so integral to British punk culture could have been a sequence from Duffo’s own fertile imagination. Soon Andy Warhol was issuing forth his oft-quoted utterence: “Sinatra, Presley, Jagger, Popeye…and now Duffo” Duffo returned to Australia in the late eighties to re-introduce his powerful voice and unique style to the local scene. His recording and accompanying video of Lou Reed’s ‘Walk on the Wildside‘ helped re-establish his career in oz and has become an Australian classic.
